A massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan on Monday afternoon, causing widespread damage and triggering tsunami alerts. The quake, which struck at 3:06 pm local time, has been reported to have killed multiple people and caused extensive infrastructural damage.

Videos from the scene show towering waves crashing into seawalls, as well as the collapse of several buildings, some of which have caught fire.

Local authorities are reporting that the earthquake and its aftermath have left multiple people dead and many more injured. Rescue crews are currently working tirelessly to locate and save individuals trapped in the rubble of collapsed structures.

The earthquake, which was initially measured at 7.3 magnitude by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), has since been revised to 7.5 magnitude by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The western coast of Japan has been heavily affected by the earthquake, with scenes of devastation emerging as rescuers continue to search for survivors and provide assistance to those who have been impacted.
