Netflix Adds Disclaimers to Indian Kidnap Drama After Hindu Name Sparks Outrage

Subtitle

The streaming giant has responded to criticism by adding disclaimers to its Indian original series "Mai."

Context and Controversy

"Mai," which premiered on April 15, 2022, follows the story of a middle-aged woman named Sheel (Sakshi Tanwar) who seeks revenge after her daughter's murder. The series sparked controversy when viewers noticed that Sheel's daughter was named Supriya, a Hindu name.

Many Hindus expressed outrage, accusing the show of "Hinduphobia" and "religious insensitivity." They argued that the use of a Hindu name for a victim of violence perpetuated negative stereotypes about their community.

Netflix's Response

In response to the criticism, Netflix has added disclaimers to the beginning and end of each episode of "Mai." The disclaimers state that the series is a work of fiction and that it "does not intend to hurt the sentiments of any individual or community."

Netflix also clarified that the name "Supriya" was chosen for its meaning, which is "beautiful," and had no religious connotations.

Expert Commentary

Experts in the field of religious sensitivity have weighed in on the controversy.

  • "It's important for filmmakers to be mindful of the religious sensitivities of their audience," said Dr. Arvind Sharma, a professor of Hindu studies at McGill University.
  • "The use of a Hindu name for a victim of violence can be seen as insensitive and perpetuate negative stereotypes," added Dr. Ananya Chakravarti, a professor of media studies at the University of Delhi.
